Capillary Bridges on Liquid-Infused Surfaces

چکیده
We numerically study two-component capillary bridges formed when a liquid droplet is placed in between two liquid-infused surfaces (LIS). In contrast to commonly studied one-component on noninfused solid surfaces, can exhibit range of different morphologies where the directly contact with two, one, or none LIS substrates. addition, may lose stability compressed due envelopment by lubricant. also characterize force, maximum separation, and effective spring force find that they are influenced shape size lubricant ridge. Importantly, these be tuned increase adhesion strength manipulating pressure, Neumann angle, wetting angles. As such, not only “slippery” parallel surface, but “sticky” perpendicular surface.

Robust liquid-infused surfaces through patterned wettability.
Liquid-infused surfaces display advantageous properties that are normally associated with conventional gas-cushioned superhydrophobic surfaces. However, the surfaces can lose their novel properties if the infused liquid drains from the surface. We explore how drainage due to gravity or due to an external flow can be prevented through the use of chemical patterning. A small area of the overall s...
متن کاملLiquid infused porous surfaces for mineral fouling mitigation.
Prevention of mineral fouling, known as scale, is a long-standing problem in a wide variety of industrial applications, such as oil production, water treatment, and many others. The build-up of inorganic scale such as calcium carbonate on surfaces and facilities is undesirable as it can result in safety risks and associated flow assurance issues. To date the overwhelming amount of research has ...
متن کاملLiquid-infused structured surfaces with exceptional anti-biofouling performance.
Bacteria primarily exist in robust, surface-associated communities known as biofilms, ubiquitous in both natural and anthropogenic environments. Mature biofilms resist a wide range of antimicrobial treatments and pose persistent pathogenic threats. Treatment of adherent biofilm is difficult, costly, and, in medical systems such as catheters or implants, frequently impossible. At the same time, ...
متن کاملControlling the formation of capillary bridges in binary liquid mixtures.
We study the formation of capillary bridges between micrometer-sized glass spheres immersed in a binary liquid mixture using bright field and confocal microscopy. The bridges form upon heating due to the preferential wetting of the hydrophilic glass surface by the water-rich phase. If the system is cooled below the demixing temperature, the bridges disappear within a few seconds by intermolecul...
